Design Studio On the Road: Visiting San Francisco

Graduate students in the Arch 8255 Urban Design studio led by Professor Ignacio San Martin traveled to San Francisco in October to visit the new Medical Campus at Mission Bay being constructed by the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. Associate Director for Facilities Sandra Beck met with students throughout a two hour presentation that included visiting the new laboratories, residential units for new Faculty and Post-doctoral research fellows and recreational facilities. The Mission Bay site was previously the location of an abandoned large Southern Pacific rail yard that has been completely transformed into a bustling new biotechnology hub. Work from MFA Graphic Design Student Jessica Barness Set for Exhibition in San Francisco

Beginning January 5, the 2012 College Book Art Association (CBAA) conference in San Francisco, CA, will feature work by MFA graphic design student Jessica Barness. Barness designed an artist book in Design Studio (DES 8114) last year, and her work has been accepted to the CBAA's BiblioTech blind juried exhibition. The project by Barness, whose emphasis is in Interactive Design, celebrates the American tradition of fortune cookies. A fortune collection was curated and explored through physical condition, language translation, syntax, and word content. Designed as an unbound series of booklets, each page unfolds to display graphic content on one side and computer generated ASCII art on the reverse.
