Dean Tom Fisher will discuss how research and development at the College of Design is impacting the field of healthcare during the Mayo Clinic Transform Symposium on Tuesday, September 11. The annual event brings together innovators, leaders, designers, entrepreneurs, policy makers and business thinkers to talk about how innovation and design solutions are transforming the experience and delivery of health care.At the College of Design, health – human health, environmental health, community health – are common areas of focus across most of its 8 academic units and 10 research centers. College of Design faculty Elizabeth Bye (Apparel Design), Kim Johnson (Retail Merchandising), and Karen LaBat (Apparel Design) joined apparel marketing and design professionals from nine countries at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology (BIFT) and International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Joint Symposium March 25th-30th. Johnson was on the planning board for this first collaborative event between the two organizations. She also presented research findings. “The new, oral format of the symposium allowed design researchers to discuss research that is inherent in the piece,” explained Bye, who presented Visual Interruption (pictured right), using original surface design to guide the form of the dress and exhibited the design (pictured above). On Wednesday, May 4, 2011, students in Barry Kudrowitz‘s (Product Design) Toy Product Design course will present and demonstrate four new toy concepts that they designed and prototyped this semester. Fred Rozumalski (BLA/MLA ’92) will lead a presentation hosted by The Minnesota Project and sponsored by Bachman’s about practical solutions to sustainable landscaping. The event, Thoughtful Landscapes in a Changing World, will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2011 and will give practical solutions anyone can employ to building landscapes that work within Minnesota’s changing climate.
The presentation and follow-up conversation, led by Rozumalski, will focus on solutions to
the problem of climate change, and specifically, landscape techniques that reduce the use
of fossil fuels, fertilizers, pesticides, and water while increasing carbon sequestration.
The event will run from 6-8 pm at Bachman’s Heritage Room (6010 Lyndale

Aaron Westre (Architecture) will present his paper “Design Games” at the 99th Annual Meeting of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). The conference takes place in Montreal, Canada March 3 – 8, 2011. The topic of the paper is Westre’s course by the same name, in which architecture students create software that is part video game, part design tool.Read more
