In Memoriam: Carl O. Graffunder (B.Arch '42)

Carl O. Graffunder (B.Arch ’42), an esteemed Minnesota architect, passed away on August 27, 2013, at age 94 from a brief illness with pneumonia. Graffunder received his Bachelor of Architecture degree with distinction from the University of Minnesota in 1942, entered the Navy where he worked as a naval architect, and received his Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University in 1948. In 1946-47 Graffunder was chief draftsman for Antonin Raymond, who was regarded as the father of modern architecture in Japan and New York City.  Graffunder returned to Minnesota after graduating from Harvard and became a design critic for the School of Architecture under the leadership of former dean Ralph Rapson. 5th Graders Take Their First Design Course

On December 5th, Terry Wiley's fifth grade class at Bruce Vento Elementary School in St. Paul took their first college course in design. As part of a new initiative at the college to empower youth, the Student Services staff in partnership with the John Comazzi, Brad Hokanson, and Director of the U of M Kids on Campus program, Tex Ostvig, "adopted" the entire class. This week's gathering was the second year of the "adoption" program, whose goal is to help elementary school students learn first-hand about college and how thinking like designers can help them with problem-solving. Graphic Design Professor Featured in Highpoint Exhibition

An intaglio (etching, drypoint, engraving, and aquatint) by Professor of Graphic Design James Boyd Brent was selected for the national juried show Stand Out Prints. The exhibition is taking place at Highpoint Center for Printmaking in Minneapolis February 24 through April 14. Highpoint received nearly 800 entries from 42 states. Brent's piece, titled "Boats, Laocoön, and Animals," was one of 57 works selected by jurors Susan Inglett and Mark Pascale. An opening reception will take place at Highpoint on Friday, February 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. You can find more information about the exhibit on Highpoint's website. Adjunct Faculty Highlight Creative Work

Earlier this month, 14 adjunct faculty at the University of Minnesota's College of Design took five minutes to present their current creative work and answer the question: "What is it you do when you're not teaching?" Adjunct faculty are vital to the mission of the College; they provide curricular flexibility and bring their diverse experiences into the academic realm. During their presentations, they highlighted their work outside of the University and not part of the classes they teach. The event helps develop a broader understanding of the talents and practice-based efforts of the College of Design adjunct faculty.
