Can design change food safety behavior? Students on a team from TERI University in Delhi, India and the University of Minnesota, including Master of Landscape Architecture student Allyson Czechowicz, asked questions like these during Acara's multi-disciplinary course last fall. Acara is a program through the Institute on the Environment that prepares young leaders to take on environmental challenges facing the world. The program's annual Acara Challenge brings together international teams of students from around the United States and India to develop entrepreneurial solutions to specific sustainable development challenges. Design Students Compete To Launch Environmental Social Ventures

Three students from the College of Design, Sara Saboonian (architecture), Allyson Czechowicz (landscape architecture), and Indira Manandha (architecture in sustainable design) are competing on separate teams for international scholarships from the Acara program. Acara, a program of the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment, will award up to eight scholarships to the Acara Summer Institute in Bangalore, India, where winning teams can continue working on ventures they developed last fall. 30 Seconds Earns Two Design Students $1,000 Scholarships

College of Design students Joel Valdez and Nathan Wong were among dozens of students who participated in the University's Driven to Discover video contest this December. On Monday, the University announced the names of 16 students whose videos received the most "likes" on the official University Facebook page. Valdez's 13th place and Wong's 14th place earned both students $1,000 in scholarship assistance. "I'd like to thank the U of M for giving me the opportunity to apply for this scholarship," says Wong. "The application process was an enjoyable one. I'd like to thank everyone that has helped me with the continuation of my education."
