Two Alumni Receive 2013 AIA Minnesota Awards

Rosemary A. McMonigal (B.Arch '81, BED '81) and Benjamin E. Awes (M.Arch '01) are recipients of the 2013 AIA-MN Residential Architects Awards.McMonigal received the 2013 Architect of Distinction award. She is a principal at McMonigal Architects LLC and has been working with clients for over 29 years by helping them create houses individually tailored to their needs. She is known for creating homes that have efficient structure in health, livability, and energy efficiency. The jury found her work to be very strong and expressive and admired her sensitivity to color, materials, light, and how she was able to work well within a small budget. 5th Graders Take Their First Design Course

On December 5th, Terry Wiley's fifth grade class at Bruce Vento Elementary School in St. Paul took their first college course in design. As part of a new initiative at the college to empower youth, the Student Services staff in partnership with the John Comazzi, Brad Hokanson, and Director of the U of M Kids on Campus program, Tex Ostvig, "adopted" the entire class. This week's gathering was the second year of the "adoption" program, whose goal is to help elementary school students learn first-hand about college and how thinking like designers can help them with problem-solving. Interdisciplinary Studio: The Future of Duluth

[Update: December 14, 2012] Students in an interdisciplinary landscape architecture and architecture graduate studio presented their final projects at Clyde Iron Works in Duluth, MN on Wednesday, December 12.More photos from DuluthDuluth Mayor Don Ness was in attendance, along with city planners, port authority workers, and design professionals from around the region.
