U Alumni Association Honors Volunteers, Students, and Remarkable Graduates

The U of M Alumni Association honored two College of Design alumni and the Design and Student Alumni Board during an awards celebration on Thursday, October 11th. Ann Carlson Birt (B.S. Home Economics '56) received the Alumni Service Award for her significant impact and service to University. A member of the Goldstein Museum of Design for more than a decade, she has served as an officer on its Friends board and helped to fund a permanent director for the museum as chair of the Director's Endowment Campaign. A leader through service, Birt is known for her "friend-raising," creating awareness of the College of Design within the community and fostering opportunities to engage her many contacts with the college. Alchemy Architects Receive AIA Award for SPECS Optical Facade

The St. Paul architecture firm Alchemy Architects, founded by Geoffrey Warner (B.Arch '89), received a 2012 Small Project Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) during an awards ceremony on May 17 in Washington D.C. Alchemy facilitates experimentation with, and the production of, key elements that are part of larger projects, from weeHouses to lofted condos. The award was for Alchemy's work on SPECS Optical Facade, an optical shop in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis. Landscape beautification installed by the city obscured their storefront, and sign code limitations prevented the shop from using signage that would be visible behind the trees and bushes. Whole Trees Architecture and Structures / Roald Gundersen (B Arch & BED '89) Win National Green Building Award

Roald Gundersen (B Arch & BED ’89) founding partner and CEO of Whole Trees Architecture and Structures in Stoddard, WI (south of La Crosse), won the green building category for the 2011 Clean Tech Open – a national competition for “innovation and and viable solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges.” Whole Trees is designing and creating green building systems from abundant forest waste, providing a competitive alternative to steel and concrete. Their Clean Tech win, combined with their lightweight composite framing win during the North Central region’s competition earlier this fall, has earned them $30,000 in prize money. Thomas Meyer Receives Minnesota Alumni Service Award

Thomas Meyer (B Arch, '74), FAIA, founder of the Minneapolis-based architecture firm MS&R Architects (Meyer, Scherer and Rockcastle, Ltd.), was honored late last week with the University of Minnesota Alumni Service Award at the annual Alumni Awards Celebration. The award recognizes Meyer's 30-plus years of service to the University, College of Design, and School of Architecture. At the ceremony, Meyer spoke eloquently on his affinity for the school through his experiences as a student, architect, teacher and adviser: It is said that "Architecture is a continuing dialogue between generations."
