Redesigning the Minneapolis Institute of Arts African Art Galleries

Cass Gilbert Professor-in-Practice Vincent James and Adjunct Professor Jennifer Yoos (B.Arch '91) will discuss plans for their redesign and renovation of the African Art Gallery at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) on Saturday, January 26 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. They will be joined by MIA Curator of African Art, Jan-Lodewijk Grootaers, in a conversation moderated by Alex Bortolot, MIA content strategist and an African art specialist. James and Yoos, along with Nathan Knutson (M.Arch '95), are principals at VJAA, which received the 2012 Architecture Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects. James Howarth (BS Arch '02, M Arch '05) Named Finalist for Ralph Rapson Traveling Fellowship

James Howarth (BS Arch '02, M Arch '05) was named a top five finalist for the Ralph Rapson 2012 Traveling Fellowship. The competition provides young architects the opportunity to advance their education in architecture by pursuing foreign or domestic travel-study. To assist in their education, $10,000 is awarded to the winner. The jury chose five finalists from among the 38 entrants. Alchemy Architects Receive AIA Award for SPECS Optical Facade

The St. Paul architecture firm Alchemy Architects, founded by Geoffrey Warner (B.Arch '89), received a 2012 Small Project Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) during an awards ceremony on May 17 in Washington D.C. Alchemy facilitates experimentation with, and the production of, key elements that are part of larger projects, from weeHouses to lofted condos. The award was for Alchemy's work on SPECS Optical Facade, an optical shop in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis. Landscape beautification installed by the city obscured their storefront, and sign code limitations prevented the shop from using signage that would be visible behind the trees and bushes.
