Landscape Architecture Students Work with Frogtown to Create Pop-Up Tree Nursery

University of Minnesota landscape architecture students are collaborating with Saint Paul Parks and Recreation Department, Frogtown residents, and the Frogtown Neighborhood Association to create a temporary nursery for 4-6 months during 2012. The pop-up tree nursery will be located on the corner of Dale and Lafond avenues for one growing season and include a mix of shade, fruit, and nut-bearing trees. The project aims to inform Frogtown residents and the city about the tree canopy deficit in their neighborhood, introduce arboriculture to Frogtown, educate residents about the role of trees in the urban environment and in the world, and provide free trees or trees at a reduced cost to Frogtown residents to plant in their yards. Namdi Alexander (BS Arch '11, M Arch) and Buying Istanbul

In May 2010, Namdi Alexander (BS Arch '11, M.Arch) arrived in Istanbul, Turkey with architecture professor Ozayr Saloojee and a handful of other students. "It is difficult to succinctly summarize how eye-opening and influential this trip was," said Alexander, a nontraditional student who completed his liberal arts degree at Minneapolis Community and Technical College before entering the architecture program at the College of Design. Before leaving on the May study abroad program, Alexander was curious about how an ancient city like Istanbul adapts itself to the modern world. Apparel Design Students Participate in the Boston Scientific Hearts for Fashion Show at the Mall of America

On Saturday, February 4th, students in the Apparel Design program will participate in the Boston Scientific Hearts for Fashion Show at the Best Buy Rotunda in the Mall of America. The event is a celebration of the Go Red for Women National Wear Red Day. The annual event aims to educate the public about heart disease and heart-healthy lifestyles for women of all ages. Shows will take place from 12:00-1:00 PM and 2:00-3:00 PM. Professional and student designers were asked to create unique designs that make a heart difference while expressing how they have been affected by heart disease in their own lives.
