Meet the 2014 Thomas F. Ellerbe Scholarship Recipients

This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the Thomas F. Ellerbe (TFE) scholarship. The TFE Scholarship Foundation was initially funded by the Ellerbe Associates, Inc. firm in 1981 to honor Tom Ellerbe (pictured right), 88 years old at the time, for his ongoing generosity of personally giving full year scholarships to worthy University of Minnesota and Notre Dame architectural students. The TFE scholarship also includes engineering students. To date there have been 16 engineering and 56 architectural recipients receiving a total of $133,000 in awards. MORE: Past recipients of the Thomas F. In Memoriam: U of M Foundation Leader Robert J. Odegard

Robert J. Odegard, age 92, of Naples, FL, passed away peacefully among family and friends, following a full life of service to community, state, and country. A devoted son, brother, husband, father, farmer, naval officer, automobile dealer, legislator, stockbroker, and celebrated fundraiser for the University of Minnesota, Bob's charisma and persistence propelled him to the top of every field in which he endeavored. With his wife Barbara at his side, Odegard engaged leaders from Minnesota's highest echelons in business, politics and education. In 2000, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of his distinguished career at the University of Minnesota Foundation. Odegard found his calling at the University. Shayla Dallmann and Drew Schmidt Awarded Portfolio 1-on-1 Scholarships

Graphic design seniors Shayla Dallmann and Drew Schmidt were awarded American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Minnesota scholarships at Portfolio 1-on-1. The annual event, held on April 12th and 13th, is an opportunity for design students and recent graduates to present their portfolios to experienced creative professionals for intensive reviews, constructive conversations, and valuable connections. "I was excited for the chance to see more design studios and receive professional feedback on my portfolio," said Dallmann. "Overall it was a great experience, I received awesome feedback and met some very talented individuals." Yasmina El-Sayed Raya (B.S. Arch '07) Receives AAAEA Scholarship

Yasmina El-Sayed Raya (B.S. Arch ’07), a Virginia Tech student enrolled in their Executive Master of Natural Resources program received a $1000 scholarship from the Arab American Association of Engineers and Architects. The scholarship is presented to a student in the field of engineering, architecture, or information technology to promote these fields and to build stronger ties between the association and the Arab American Community. After graduation from the College of Design, Raya started working at an environmental design firm where she helped her clients meet LEED accreditation standards. “As a result,” she said, “[my] initial interest in sustainability issues just continued to grow. I realized that I wanted to devote my career to green initiatives and began searching for…

Sandra Arciniega to Attend Community Development Conference in Ohio

Sandra Arciniega (Housing Studies) received a travel scholarship from the Community Development Society (CDS) to attend their Annual International Conference July 21-25, 2012 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The goal of CDS is to provide leadership to professionals and citizens across the spectrum of community development. The conference brings together members to discuss best practices and current research in their field. "I want to be a part of creating working, livable, and viable communities," said Arciniega, who also has a concentration in Community Development and Policy. "Attending this conference will give me the opportunity to be surrounded by individuals who have extensive knowledge and experience." Cory Etzkorn (Graphic Design) was awarded an American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Minnesota Scholarship during the 2012 Portfolio 1-on-1 student portfolio conference. The regional event puts developing design students and their books in front of experienced creative professionals for intensive reviews, constructive conversations, and valuable connections. Design Students Compete To Launch Environmental Social Ventures

Three students from the College of Design, Sara Saboonian (architecture), Allyson Czechowicz (landscape architecture), and Indira Manandha (architecture in sustainable design) are competing on separate teams for international scholarships from the Acara program. Acara, a program of the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment, will award up to eight scholarships to the Acara Summer Institute in Bangalore, India, where winning teams can continue working on ventures they developed last fall.
