Apparel Design Celebrates 50th Annual Fashion Show

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the College of Design’s annual Apparel Design Fashion Show. Planned by the senior class, the show is a rite of passage for its participants and gives seniors the opportunity to create a fashion show from the ground up. The planning for this year’s event, entitled This is Now, has been even more elaborate than in the past with lots of additions made to honor the anniversary.

Mother-Daughter Teams Co-Design Culturally Appropriate Activewear

Mother-Daughter pairs examine potential design options for active wear.

Two years ago Professor Elizabeth Bye (Apparel Design) received an Extension Block Grant to research the physical activity of mother-daughter pairs in East African communities. “The project grew out of research I did with the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sports a few years ago. We had created culturally appropriate activewear for girls in the Twin Cities’ East African community and we received a lot of feedback from the mothers whose daughters participated in the project that they wanted similar athletic wear for themselves.”

College of Design Researchers Take On Grand Challenges

As part of the work to tackle the University’s five Grand Challenge focus areas, the University has allocated $2.96 million over the next two years through the University’s Driving Tomorrow awards. This funding will support six interdisciplinary team projects and two six-member one-year Grand Challenges Research Scholar Collaboratives. Participating on the teams being funded are two College of Design faculty members Kristine Miller (Landscape Architecture) and Daniela Sandler (Architecture).
