In Memoriam: John Weidt (B.A. Arch ’67)
John Weidt, founder of the innovative practice, The Weidt Group, passed away on April 8, 2014. He was a pioneer for energy and environmental stability in the built environment. In the 1960’s John was one of the first to scientifically research the embodied energy and
environmental impact of the production of building materials. Weidt was also a member of the College of Design Dean’s advisory board.
John created The Weidt Group in 1977 and slowly built the firm into a national presence by the mid 1980’s. He did this through research and development contracts with national labs and major building manufacturers. Continually trying to advance his interest in energy and sustainability, he and the firm, developed methods to provide energy design assistance to building owners and designers. As a result, today, The Weidt Group consults on over 350
new construction and renovation design projects a year. Another passion of John’s, computers and software, led him to develop manufacturing applications, lighting design and HVAC design software. His interests, creativity and drive led him to create a unique practice for an architect and created a collaborative environment to help architects and clients improve their projects and positively support the environment.
He was a rare and talented individual who was intelligent, strong, and hardworking. For those who knew him, you always knew that he loved people and nature. As a leader and the founder of the company, he set the direction for The Weidt Group – focused on doing high quality work, respecting others, building great teams, and having fun. He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of John’s life was held on Saturday, May 3, between 1:30-4:30 p.m. in St. Paul at the Downtowner Woodfire Grill at 253 7th Street W.
